‘Mass Effect 4’ team given a week to implement new ideas ‘without restriction'

In an attempt to foster unhindered creativity,Bioware allowed the development team of the next Mass Effect game to spend an entire week to work on personal projects for what they’d like to add to the fourth installment of the popular sci-fi series if they were given the freedom to do so. Mass Effect series producer Michael Gamblerevealed on April 7 that he spent a full three hours of the day reviewing what the team produced during their week of free-reign and gave the following comment to describe how exciting he found the content.

We gave the Mass Effect team a week, without restriction, to prototype new ideas. Watching 3 hours worth of WOWOMG now.

This wasn’t the first time that a development team was allowed company time to add what they wanted to a game. The Bethesda team were also given a full week to add personal projects to The Elder Scrolls V: Skryim. Unlike Bioware taking time in the middle of development to engage in a creativity experiment, Bethesda developers weren’t given their opportunity to freely create new content until after Skyrim had already launched. However, several of the teams’ creations were later added to Skyrimvia DLC packs such as the vampire lord system of Dawnguard and Dragonborn’s dragon riding mechanic.

It will be interesting to see if anything will be added to the upcoming Mass Effect title as a result of the developer’s week of free creativity. At this point, however, not much is currently known regarding the next Mass Effect game. The most that Bioware has revealed to date is that the next entry will feature a new protagonist as the Commander Shepard storyline concluded at the end of Mass Effect 3.
